HTML5

HTML5 is the next major revision of the HTML standard, currently under development.
Like its immediate predecessors, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a standard for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. The new standard incorporates features like video playback and drag-and-drop that have been previously dependent on third-party browser plug-ins such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight.

Silverlight

Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform implementation of the .NET Framework for building media experiences and rich interactive applications for the web, the desktop, and the Windows Phone.

Controversy:
Silverlight, DOA

Microsoft's head of servers and tools division, Bob Muglia’s statement that Microsoft has shifted strategy towards Silverlight and they are emphasizing on HTML5 as only true cross platform solution.

This made the developer around the world very disappointed feeling they have wasted their time and money on the Silverlight as next generation web platform solution.
